Backside Aerial
Airtime on a sideshore wave ride with Arthur Thébault
The backside aerial is a jump with a flagged wing on a wave. It is jumped while riding a wave, take-off and landing take place in the same wave. Backside means that the back is facing the wave.
When riding a wave down-the-line in sideshore conditions, you ride away from the wind. If you stand switch on the board when riding towards the beach - as you can see here in the video - then you do the bottom turn, cutback and jumps with your back to the wave. In this case, the wing is held with the front hand.
You can also practise this jump in flat water conditions: Ride switch, let the wing drift downwind (front hand at the leading edge handle) and then just take-off for a jump.
