Backwind Jibe

Lift the wing to windward and jet around the turn after changing grip

The backwind jibe is a sleek jibe variant when wing foiling, as you first reach around and then ride through the turn at full throttle. Here you can see a riding technique video including slow motion and mirrored view for both riding directions.

This move is performed in switch stance: At a slight downwind course the wing is lifted upwind with the leading edge towards the wind. To do this, the rear hand grips the front handle (here: the front of the boom). While the arm guides the wing flat to windward over the head with one hand, the other hand grips to the back.

This means that the change of the grip has already taken place and you can concentrate fully on foiling the jibe and guiding the wing.

Now the wing is tended against the wind so that it receives slight power from the top. Tip: leave the lower wing tip a little further back and tilt the wing only slightly into the wind. The greater the tilt towards the vertical (power zone), the greater the power in the wing.

In the video you can see the wind blowing onto the top of the wing when initiating the jibe. The profile on the top of the wing is pressed in by the wind. To avoid this, you steer the board into the turn. Riding away from the wind reduces the power in the wing.

Even before half of the jibe, the airstream fills the profile from the right side. Then the wings trailing edge is guided through the wind, from this moment on the wind reaches into the wing from the normal side again and you can finish foiling the backwind jibe.
