Backwind Tack

How to ride backwinded and initiate the tack

This is how the backwind tack works: Foil in switch stance, steer downwind slightly, switch grip with your rear hand to the front of the boom, lift the wing over your head to windward with one hand, grab the boom at the rear with your other hand, keep the wing open (leading edge into the wind, trailing edge to leeward) and push it back, then luff up until the wind blows into the wing from the other side again. Now just close the gap and continue riding.

Tip: Practice in light winds or with a smaller wing, as a backwinded wing will otherwise push you quite strongly to leeward. A deeper downwind course also helps to reduce the power in the wing.
