Flag the wing

Letting the wing drift

Flagging the wing or letting the wing drift - this is the term used when the wing is held downwind of the body by the leading edge handle (front tube handle). You normally only use this technique when riding waves, but it can also be practiced on flat water.

However, you have to pump the foil to keep going. The small face of wind waves can also help to keep moving on flat water with a flagged wing.

It is best to build up speed on a slight downwind course and then grip the wing with your back hand on the leading edge handle. The wing continues to fly in the airstream even in this neutral position, but does not generate any power.

As long as you foil fast enough, the wing will hover. Start with 2-3 short pump cycles and then take the wing up again. The better you can coordinate your pumping, the longer you can keep going. If you have already mastered pump foiling, you can foil an entire leg.
