Getting washed

After a crash in the surf

Unfortunately, these moments are a part of wingfoiling in waves. After a crash in the surf, two things are important: avoiding injuries and damage to the equipment.

The most important point here is: the wing foil board must never be between you and the wave. The force of a wave would wash it towards you in an uncontrolled manner.

Therefore: Avoid collision and push the board to the side or swim sideways out of the danger zone if you cannot push the board to the side quickly enough.

In the area of breaking waves, the water is usually deep enough so that not the board and foil, but actually only the wing can be damaged (by the tips of the foil or the force of a massive wave).

The wing should therefore be lifted over the wave with the leading egde in front. Even if it is upside down, it can be lifted over the wave using the front handle.

As you are connected to the board via the board leash, the wave not only has a direct effect on your body during the wash, but will also pull hard on the leash as the board is also pulled towards the beach by the wave.

The board and foil can be damaged if you are pulled too far into shallow water (reef, rocky ground). That's why you should only take on the challenge of a surf spot if you can safely foil in waves.
