Raley

Lying flat in the air is the goal

In this video, you can clearly see how to jump a raley. The camera is facing directly in the direction of travel, and you can see how to bear away from a crosswind course to the takeoff. During the jump, steer the board down first, then up on a chop.

The board jumps in an arc into the wind, but the wing is pulled tight with the back hand so that it continues to fly on a crosswind course. This is what gives the jump its momentum: with your feet in the straps and your hands on the boom, centrifugal force keeps your body level in the air.

At that moment, your eyes focus on the landing. You point the nose of the board into a slight downwind course, pull yourself up on the boom with your arms, and bend your hips. That’s how you guide the board back under your body. Touchdown on a slight downwind course, and the ride continues.

When practicing the raley, you can start very small: First, just carve a turn to windward, then work your way up to a small backside air, and as you gain more height, try to extend your body further and further.
