How to practice a frontside wave ride on flat water

Bottom turn and cutback

Done-the-line wave rides when wing foiling can be practiced on flat water. Just like later on the wave, both hands remain on the boom when practicing on a lake.

The wave is imaginary and you start with the bottom turn. To do this, lay the wing flat in the turn, as you would for a laydown jibe. Shortly after halfway through the turn, however, you go downwind further, lift the wing behind your body, turn the lower wingtip forward, and then turn in the other direction until you are back in your original direction of travel. It feels just like riding a wave.

The technique consists of two tricks: Laydown Jibe and Backwind Jibe - you can learn these separately and then simply combine them. Your training program for the next session at the lake is ready.
