Pumping 360
Around the world
Around the world: pumping an circle with the wing drifting behind your body - that's the pumping 360. A good workout for pumping, which you often need when surfing waves.
Pumping only with the foil is a technique that is used when riding waves and on downwinders. This allows you to keep going when a section of the wave is a little flatter.
Pumping with the foil can be practiced on a crosswind course if you use the force of small (knee-high) wind waves. The wing is brought into a neutral position behindd your body and held only with the handle on the front tube. This is also called flagging (to flag the wing), a neutral position like a flag in the wind.
The move shown here is another exercise to train your pumping skills. Duotone calls this around the world in the tutorial - a pumped 360 to leeward, a kind of downwind 360 without using the wing.
To do this, you enter the turn downwind with speed, take the wing down and the inside hand grips the front handle. Now it's important to keep going and ride in a steady circle while pumping your board.
The most difficult part here is the changing airflow in the wing. The wing is guided like a trailer and turns with the trailing edge through the wind at 1/4 of the circle (when pumping downwind). The wing can be pushed onto the water and thus slow down your speed. The trick is therefore easiest to foil in light winds, because then the airstream is stronger in relation to the real wind and the wing is more stable over the leading edge.
After that, it's all about pumping, staying centered over the board and complete the circle evenly into the water. Back on a crosswind course, take the wing up again and use the wind to continue your flight. This completes the pumping 360.
