Switch Stance Duck Jibe
Variant with one-handed wing control
Duck jibes can be performed in different ways. Either very controlled with a quick grab a little later in the jibe, or in the more stylish version with one-handed wing control right from the start.
With the second option, you normally grab the boom at the back with your front hand first and then let go with the other hand — but there is another way: first, your back hand reaches around — from an overhand grip to an underhand grip — so that you don't twist your wrist. Then you steer into the jibe and let go of the wing with your front hand.
The wing then swings in a controlled manner to leeward while the hand pulls the boom over the head. This brings you within reach to grab it again with the other hand.
When your second hand is back on the boom, reach forward with your rear hand. Then move the other hand back a little further. And just like that, you have the wing under control again.
The sticking points when letting go of the front hand:
- In very light winds and when traveling too fast downwind, the wing tends to tip downwards
- In stronger winds or if you release your front hand too early, the wing has so much power that it swings to leeward and then either pulls uncontrollably on your hand or swings further back to windward. That would be half the battle in a double duckjibe.
