Wave Selection
How to choose the right wave for a ride
This video from the Duotone Wing Academy introduces beginners into wave selection at a surf spot.
In the video you can see nearly perfect conditions with clean sets of a larger swell, but the basic criteria can be applied to all surf spots:
- The waves of a swell roll in sets (usually 2-4 higher waves in a row) towards the beach, the individual waves of a set have a different character
- Only choose empty waves so as not to take the right of way from other surfers
- Look for spots with a wave height that suits your level or choose the smaller waves after a set to avoid crashing in the surf
- If the waves still seem too high for you, then it's better not to go out and look for another spot with smaller waves
Foiling in waves requires experience, which you have to acquire step by step. You can slowly increase the wave height. Beginners start best on round, unbroken waves. With more and more experience, you can then also foil in higher waves.
