Backwind Jibe

Slow-motion video

Watershot of a backwind jibe – in slow motion and prepared for both directions of riding (goofy and regular). The wing is first lifted to windward, then you foil backwinded into the jibe.

You can control the power of the backwinded wing better if you switch to a downwind course before lifting the wing to windward.

Pay attention to the position of the backwinded wing: tilt the lower wingtip backward, push the front tube into the wind with your front hand, and hold the wing downwind with your rear hand (open it to leeward).

Foil downwind (power in the wing continues to decrease) and then quickly push the wing in front of you through the wind with the trailing edge.

This trick is easier to practice in light winds, as strong winds make it difficult to maintain control when holding the wing backwinded.
