Testing the EFS Retractable Leash System
Hip belt with self-retracting board leash
In January, we featured the Zero Drag Retracting Leash from Blue Planet Surfshop in an article. Also based in Hawaii is the company EfoilSolutions (EFS), whose retractable leash system works similarly but features a much more compact and lightweight design.
The principle is the same - it’s a board leash worn on the waist belt, whose line creates a very short connection to the foilboard when not under load. So nothing dangles around or drags through the water.
When fully extended, the EFS leash measures 440 cm
In the event of a fall, the leash unrolls due to the resulting tensile forces and reaches a maximum length of 4.40 meters. The plastic box worn on the hip belt contains a spring whose tension automatically retracts the leash.
Inside, a thin webbing strap unrolls; on the outside, an elastic leash with a carabiner is attached as the end piece.
The roll-up unit with a rounded housing weighs approximately 390 grams including the leash; the waist belt adds another approximately 210 grams.

Testing in practice
The leash works and does what it’s supposed to: it stays short while foiling, then extends to provide a safe distance from the board in the event of a fall. The tension of the roll leash is stronger than what you’d find, for example, in a spiral leash. This means the board quickly comes back within reach after a fall, allowing you to grab it.
If you’re already wearing a waist belt to attach the wing and/or board leash, the Roll-Leash adds about 200-300 grams of extra weight. You’ll have to get used to a hard box sitting on your back. In the worst-case scenario, you might hit the board with it during a fall. The box is well-padded against your body thanks to the original strap.
Inside the box is a spring that winds up the internal belt and keeps it taut when extended
There are two openings in the box through which you should rinse it after using it in salt water. However, it takes a few days for the inside to dry completely, even on a radiator, as evidenced by the condensation on the inside of the housing.
And then there’s the issue of lubrication: the spring inside should be lubricated from time to time; the manufacturer recommends using silicone oil (we’re still waiting for details on the exact specifications, as contact with water means environmental impact must be considered - therefore, never use just 'any' lubricant). The spring can also be replaced.
The external leash has the right length
In Europe, the EFS Retractable Leash System is available from E-Surfer.com (ranging from 109 euros for the leash box and leash to a complete kit with hip belt, harness hook and vest for 249 euros).
