Riding Upwind
Alternative name: Upwind
Category: Basics
Level of difficulty: Level 2 (from 4)
Description
Foiling upwind: to go upwind when foiling, you have to choose a course close to the wind (upwind). Steer your board as far into the wind as possible without losing speed.
As you can’t sail directly into the wind, you have to foil a zigzag course against the wind. Wing foil boards can be set at an angle of up to 45° to the wind.
To ride upwind, hold the wing relatively upright and move it slightly to the rear and sheet in. The body’s center of gravity is shifted forward over the board. The aim is to stay foiling with sufficient pressure in the wing. If the course is too steep into the wind, you will slow down and get out of foiling.
