Pump Start

Active pumping

During some sessions, the wind is so light at times that you can’t get going without actively pumping. In that case, a pump start is the best way to get the foil ride going.

By coordinating the pumping motion of the wing and the board (or foil), you generate the necessary base speed for the foil to generate dynamic lift.

To do this, choose a light downwind course and start by pumping when you see a gust forming upwind on the water ahead of you. The first few strokes generate forward momentum until you can push the board into a wave-like motion.

Tilting the board up and down increases the flow velocity around the foil's wings, allowing for an earlier takeoff.

The arm pull is coordinated so that pulling on the wing accelerates the board downward from a high position, allowing it to rise back up using the generated speed, where the next arm pull begins.

A few vigorous pumps are enough to reach the speed needed for sustained foiling. Once on the foil, the board accelerates and can maintain its speed without further pumping.

Tip: Always perform pump starts with a lot of energy. It’s better to do one less if the wind is very light, but make sure to go all out when the right gust comes along. Pump starts can be really exhausting - just like a sprint in running.
