Raley
Fly horizontally through the air
The raley is a pretty crazy jump in which you fly horizontally through the air. And it's not even that difficult.
The principle is simple: before jumping off, you carve upwind and jump with the board into the wind, while maintaining the original direction of travel with your body and wing.
The wing flies straight ahead, the board follows the impulse of the take-off - in between, the body tenses up and you can fly through the air for a brief moment with outstretched arms and legs.
The board has to go back down to land, so if necessary, set the wing a little more neutral to slow down the flight. The board then swings back under the body.
You can approach the raley slowly:
- Initially carve upwind without jumping off to get a feel for this change of direction. You will also learn how to turn from upwind back onto the downwind course. This is basically a backside turn that you can also do against a wave.
- Then lift off very easily, lifting the foil out of the water only briefly. This will introduce you to jumping off and touching down again.
- If you do this a little harder, you can do a backside air - basically a small jump around the corner (demo to follow in the next few days).
- Once you have this down, you can gradually increase the jump height. Always make sure that you don't accelerate too much forwards (landing with the foil not yet turned back puts a lot of strain on the material).
With the Raley you can also bend your legs, the board then swings behind your back with the bottom facing upwards (Video example) - however, the foil comes dangerously close to the wing and body. So, as always, learn the basics first, then the extreme variations.
Helmet and protector vest on and off you go. You can find all tutorials on the raley on our overview page for this jump: wingdaily.de/en/wing-foiling-techniques/raley.htm
