Backwind Jibe

Jibing with the wing held back

With the backwind jibe, you lift the wing upwind and let the back pressure push you around the turn.

The move is initiated when foiling in switch stance. To reduce the power in the wing, foil downwind slightly and lift the wing upwind with the front arm past the front of the head - with the leading edge diagonally downwards. The other hand grips it again.

In the wing you can feel the back pressure from the wind, which now pushes into the canopy from the top. This is the critical moment with this jibe variant, because the wing pushes a lot. But don't let this impress you, because sailing away from the wind (downwind) reduces the power in your wing quite well.

Stay on your radius, because the faster you come around the turn, the easier it is to guide the wing around the outside of the jibe. The leading edge, which was initially tilted downwards, is aligned normally again and the wingtip is pushed through the wind.

At this point you have almost completed the backwind jibe. Now simply foil the turn to the end and continue on the new course.
