Wingpass Tack - switch stance

The toeside version of the wingpass tack

Tacking with the drifting wing in your back is called a wingpass tack. At the beginning of the turn to windward, the handle change is done with the front tube handle of the wing behind your back. Here you can see the switch stance (toeside) variant.

First, you need to consider which hand the wing's leash is attached to, as it always gets in the way during this turn. Unless you are winging with a hip leash and push the harness into position before the turn so that the attachment point of the leash is behind your back.

When using a wrist leash, the leash must be lifted over the head when turning. In the video, you can see the wing pass tack with the leash on the right wrist.

First, try to accelerate on crosswind to gain enough momentum for the complete turn with the wing flagged behind you. It is essential to fly through cleanly.

The rear hand reaches over the front hand to grasp the handle on the front tube, which then guides the wing behind the back. At the same time your turn to windward starts.

The hand on the inside of the turn swings back and grabs the handle from below (this is the fastest way to make contact), but then immediately switches to the upper grip (turn your hand, maintain contact with the handle).

Now the leash must be moved to the other side: to do this, bring your arm forward and over your head so that the leash falls over your head and shoulder to the inside of the turn.

Now finish the turn and, if necessary, pump with the foil if you have lost too much speed. Grab the boom with your free hand, then the other hand. Pull tight and continue foiling.

If you are wearing the leash on your left wrist, lift it over your head and inwards right at the start of the tack.

You can practice the trick and how to handle the leash quite well on the beach with the wing in your hand. After that, it will soon work on the water too. The key is not to lose your flight while foiling upwind.
