Zero Drag Retracting Leash Review

Self-winding board leash for the waist belt

Three months ago, we introduced the Zero Drag Retracting Leash System in a news article. The system features a box worn on the waist belt that keeps a short, elastic leash taut while foiling, but creates a significant distance from the board in the event of a fall.

The Blue Planet Surfshop on Oahu has further developed the system based on the Oceanus Reel leash, which originated in the kitesurfing sector, and designed it to be about 10% smaller and lighter. A housing worn on the waist belt uses spring tension to ensure automatic retraction.

This way, the leash doesn't drag through the water while foiling and doesn't dangle between your legs. If you fall, the leash can then unroll, creating a significant distance between the board and your body.

We've now tested the system on the water and measured the length of the lines on land.

Positive
While foiling, the leash strap is fully retracted into the box due to the tight spring tension. Only the short “shock cord” (similar to a heavy-duty leash) connects the box to the board. It neither rests on the deck nor drags through the water.

When fully extended, the total length is approximately 420 cm. This means that, depending on the crash (especially in the surf), you are farther away from the board than would be possible with, for example, a typical spiral leash (the Indiana Leash, which was tested in parallel, measured approximately 300 cm).

Negative
With the Zero Drag Retracting Leash System, you strap a hard plastic box to your hip. For one thing, that doesn’t feel very comfortable, and for another, there’s the added weight. The box, together with the shock cord, weighs about 470 g when dry (approx. 392 + 78 g), and the required hip belt adds to that.

Conclusion
The system provides extra distance from the board (about 1 to 2 meters - depending on the leash you’re using) and does a great job of ensuring that the leash causes minimal interference while foiling and when changing foot positions on the board. These benefits come at the cost of hardware that sits right where you’d rather not be carrying a bulky hip bag.

Definitely a good idea for wipe outs in big waves, and worth trying out for anyone who’s had a hard time getting along with standard board leashes.
