Jibe

Regular and goofy

This video shows the wing foil jibe at normal speed and in slow motion. First in regular stance (left foot in front), then mirrored for goofy foot rider (right foot in front).

Shift your body weight onto your toes to steer the board into the turn. Make sure you keep a constant turning radius, as flying evenly on the foil is the most difficult part of jibing.

On the downwind course, the front hand changes the grip first (the wing can then be turned more easily). Then the back hand lets go of the handle. The wing is held only with the front hand to leeward of the body, pulled slightly over the head and turned in the new direction.

Then the second hand grips the handle again - at the very front. The other hand slides backwards on the boom (for wings without a boom: grab one of the rear loops or handles). You have already completed 3/4 of the jibe. Now just haul the wing and keep on foiling.

Tips for riding in switch stance

Riding in switch stance on the new crosswind course is unfamiliar at first. You can practise controlling the foil when riding with twisted feet by not riding the jibe all the way to the end, but instead trying to stay on a deep, downwind course. This way you have very low power in the wing and get a feeling for how the foil reacts. Try to change your course with little turns in upwind and downwind direction (serpentinnes).

The best way to practise is to ride upwind first and then keep an eye on the leeward area when rinding in serpentine lines so that you don't cross the path of other surfers.
